چکیده

HE detection of bands of enzyme activity showing different rates of migration Tduring starch gel electrophoresis has been reported repeatedly in recent years. This technique has been particularly useful in genetic studies, and many cases are now known of a band or bands, termed isozymes, which are under genetic control. Such control has been demonstrated for alkaline phosphatase in bacteria ( SCHLESINGER and LEVINTHAL 1963) , Drosophila larvae (BECKMAN and JOHNSON 1964), and human serum (BOYER 1961; ARFORS, BECKMAN and LUNDIN 1963; SHREFFLER 1965). In the present study a somewhat different type of inheritance is described for alkaline phosphatase isozymes of chicken serum. Similar findings have recently been reported by LAW and MUNRO (1965).

Since hypophosphatasia was first described (Rathbun, 1948), other cases which have been recognized have raised the possibility that this defect of alkaline phosphatase is an inherited inborn error of metabolism. Schneider and Corcoran (1950) first suggested that this was an inherited disorder when two cases were found in one family, and this was corroborated by Sobel, Clark, Fox and Robinow (19...

Thyroidal control of serum alkaline phosphatase level in the chicken.

It has been reported that serum alkaline phosphatase level is extremely high in the young chicken but reaches a low level in the adult(Common, 1936; Tanabe and Wilcox, 1960a). Thyroid hormone secretion rate on the basis of unit body weight has been noted to be higher in the young chicken than in the adult (Schultz and Turner, 1945 ; Himeno et al., 1960). Recently, Tanabe and Wilcox (1960b)repor...

Familial increased serum intestinal alkaline phosphatase: a new variant associated with Gilbert's syndrome.

Investigation of mild, inherited increased serum alkaline phosphatase activity partially combined with Gilbert's syndrome in one family showed, apart from a normal liver fraction, an intestinal isoenzyme pattern and an extra band in the agar electrophoresis. Analysis by agarose electrophoresis before and after incubation of neuraminidase showed that the extra fraction was an intestinal variant ...

A cancer-associated, fast, homoarginine-sensitive electrophoretic form of serum alkaline phosphatase.

Serum from patients with a variety of cancers often (p = 70%) contains a characteristic electrophoretic form of alkaline phosphatase detectable by cellulose polyacetate electrophoresis. The lower prevalence of this electrophoretic form in presumably healthy individuals (p = 7%) and noncancer hospitalized patients (p = 30%) suggests that it may be useful as a diagnostic or monitory marker.

Electrophoretic separation of tissue-specific serum alkaline phosphatases.

Previous electrophoretic methods for the separation of tissue-specific serum alkaline phosphatases have either been unable to separate the liver and bone enzymes or have been too involved for routine clinical use. A relatively simple electrophoretic method is described which separates placental, liver, bone, and intestinal alkaline phosphatases in serum. The clinical applications of such a meth...
